A psych-ed report is multipage document filled with difficult jargon and scores, but also filled with valuable information about a student’s unique learning profile. 

A Teacher’s Guide to Psych-Eds takes the time to go through each element of the report in detail. It explains the type of information you will find in the report and how to use it to meet your student’s individual needs.

Psychoeducational assessments use standardized measures to assess an individual’s academic and cognitive skills. The reports serve as a way to communicate the results of the assessment and other information about the individual with the goal of providing a clearer picture of the student’s abilities. In some cases, students with be given a diagnosis base on the information collected during this process.

A psych-ed report can provide valuable information about how your student learns, why they might be struggling and the best ways you can support them. When you are armed with this information you are able to make better decision about the student’s learning as far as supporting them in the classroom, in small groups and individually. It can also help you decide whether a particular intervention matches the student’s needs.

I created this course because too often psych-eds are used as a means to an end, providing a student with a diagnosis so they can receive additional support at school. Once the student has the diagnosis, they report is filed away and almost forgotten. Preservice teachers receive a crash course in psych-eds during their training and do not feel comfortable reading the document because they don’t understand the language. 

In A Teacher’s Guide to Psych-Eds, I will take you step by step through the report and talk you through case studies so you can see what I look for when I read these reports. Yes, I know that reading the report just seems like extra work, but a well written psych-ed will give you so much information. It provides you with clues for how to set a student upr for success instead of failure which will save you time in the future.
